Storybook Character B.E.A.R. Parade

Posted on May 18th, by erin in Events, kid friendly activity, Nevada City. No Comments

The annual Nevada City B.E.A.R. (Be Excited About Reading) Storybook Character Parade is another fabulous reason why I love our community.  School children marched proudly down Broad Street dressed as their favorite book character to the cheers of supportive fans.  ”We are so lucky to live in a town/community where they will close down the street for an hour for our kids to be able to show off their love of reading,” said Kathryn Boswell.  ”I am so proud to be one of those parents and I know my boys were grinning from ear to ear the entire walk down Broad Street today.”  Thank you to Joe Limov,  Julie Bryan and the Nevada City School District PTA for continuing such a fabulous local tradition.  Kudos to the Nevada City City Council for kicking off the parade, we loved … Read More »

Jim Rogers Memorial Bike Ride

Posted on February 9th, by erin in cycling, Events, Nevada City, Outdoor Activities. 2 comments

A beautiful day in Nevada City today provided 150 riders the opportunity to gather and show their support for Jim Rogers, a well known local cyclist and one of the founders of the Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop who died in 2010 while riding his bicycle.  The 4th annual commemorative ride hopes to bring attention to the dangers of using cell phones while driving.  The ride started from the Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop and rode the LeMond Loop, out Newton Road.  ”A lot of people came to together for the ride, definitely showcasing our town local community spirit,” said Kurt Stephens.  The lunch afterwards benefited YBONC and all left over food was donated to the Hospitality House.

Pinewood Derby

The Nevada City Cub Scouts gathered last night to test their Pinewood Derby cars.  This is one of those events that reminds me why I love living in a small town.  Fellow Cub Scout Mom and Live Healthy Nevada County Director, Aimee Retzler said, “49 kids worked feverishly to build their racing cars and the sense of community in our small town that comes out at this event every year.  There’s so much bad news in the press.  This is a feel good story about little kids working with their families and their hands to create something from scratch.  No technology or fancy gadgets involved here, just some hammers, drills, saws and sandpaper.”  The fatest times went to Gerik, Cole, Carson, Jake and Shane,  congrats to all the kids who participated.  I think we may have … Read More »

The Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival is coming to Nevada City on Friday, February 1st at the Nevada Theatre.  Put on by Snowlands Network, a Nevada City based non-profit, that is dedicated to backcountry skiers, snowshoers and snowboarders.  ”The festival was created eight years ago to highlight Winter Wildlands Alliance’s efforts to preserve and promote winter landscapes for human-powered users,” says Laurel Harkness, Executive Director of Snowlands Network.  The festival will show seven different films ranging from “ Skiing the Void” by Sweetgrass Productions, “Further” from Teton Gravity Research to “Unicorn Sashimi” by Felt Soul Media.

Last spring I got the opportunity to go on my first backcountry hut trip at Lost Trail Lodge to celebrate two special people in my life, my sister, Megan Michelson and her husband, Dan Abrams.  Seasoned backcountry skiers the two … Read More »

Wild and Scenic Film Festival

The SYRCL Wild and Scenic Film Festival is probably one of my favorite events in Nevada City.  Our small town is transformed into hub of activity, with amazing films, music, art and workshops.  The energy around town is contagious, people are excited to be here and are passionate about environmental causes and having their stories heard.  Each and every one of us is important and we can make a difference, for inspiration just look at the children!   These photos barely scratch the surface on weekend’s fun, but if you haven’t had a chance to experience the Wild and Scenic Film Festival I would start planning for next year’s festival, an event not to be missed.  Today’s photos include the Mowen Solinsky Gallery opening party, the Salmon Parade, the Del Oro School Program, the Nevada … Read More »
