South Yuba River

School’s out, summer has officially started and it’s time to go to your favorite swimming hole on the South Fork of the Yuba River.  The river is one of our favorite recommendations for things to do in Nevada City, regardless of the season, but the warm summer days make swimming a great family friendly activity.  There are a number of magical spots, either at 49 Crossing (pictured here), Edwards Crossing, Purdons Crossing, Washington, Bridgeport, Jones Bar, to name a few.  So what are you waiting for?  Grab your river gear and enjoy the sunshine!  If you need directions to the river, feel free to stop by the Outside Inn’s office, we’re always happy to help figure out which location is best suited for you.  And if heading to the river isn’t the right spot for you, we’ve … Read More »

Bridgeport

While the temperatures may be dropping a bit, now is still a fabulous time to head to the South Yuba River.  Head down to Bridgeport and walk along the Buttermilk Bend trail, check out the covered bridge or bring a book and sit on a rock and soak up the sun.  If you’re ambitious jump on your bike and ride down to the State Park, regardless of your activity, you’ll be happy you made the trip.

Independence Trail

The weather in Nevada City is fabulous, why not take a hike?  Independence Trail is 5.5 miles from downtown Nevada City off Highway 49.  The trail twists and turns along the Excelsior Canal, where the gold rush era wooden flumes now provide the wheelchair accesible trail.  Walk the mile to the waterfall, or take the steep trail down to Jones Bar and take a dip in the South Yuba River, options for all ages and levels.
